We'll keep this post in 'recovering' status until Microsoft fully resolve their incident.
The web versions of the 365 apps do now appear to be functional via office.com

"We've disabled proactive caching to provide some relief. In parallel, we've tested and deployed a fix, which we believe will remediate impact. We anticipate that the fix will take approximately two hours to complete."

"We’re focusing our investigation on token generation within our authentication infrastructure. In parallel, we’re reviewing recent changes to determine the root cause."
Microsoft's next update is due by 13:30 GMT.
As this is an issue for Microsoft to resolve - a potential workaround would be to use the Desktop version of the Office apps - either on a staff, PC Classroom or Library PC.
