Updating this post to reflect that the cause is identified (Windows Update KB50773455)

Microsoft are due to release the fix KB5077797 via Windows Update from Tuesday 10th February. In the meantime, the steps below can be followed by those encountering the shutdown issue.

Investigating

Microsoft recently released an update to Windows 11 - KB50773455.

Once installed, this update introduced an issue where the device would not shut down correctly from the power options in the Start Menu. The device would restart and return to the login screen. This is a wider Microsoft issue, not specific to St Andrews Windows devices.

A fix has been provided for this (KB5077797), which has been made available via Software Centre, ahead of Microsoft releasing it as part of their normal update process.

If you encounter this on your University-issued Windows device

  • Select the Windows Start menu and search for Software
  • Select Software Centre
  • When the list of applications displays - select or search for 'Windows 11 23H2 KB5077797'
  • Select Install
  • The install process can take 10-15 minutes, during which you can continue to use your device

  • Once installation completes - it will prompt to restart.

  • Save any open work, and restart your device.

Your device should now shutdown correctly from the Windows Start Menu power options.
